The UCD O’Brien Centre for Science consists of 38,000m² of new and refurbished accommodation at an overall cost of almost €175m. It is home to over 2,000 undergraduate students, more than 500 graduate students, and many more researchers across a range of scientific disciplines.
The project includes substantial energy efficiency design features throughout including the selection of low energy equipment and solutions to achieve a BREEAM excellent certification.
Allied completed an extensive fit-out of this prestigious building that included new offices, active learning environments, meeting rooms and teaching spaces.
Atrium Glazing
A partially glazed roof floods the three-storey atrium at UCD’s new O’Brien Centre for Science with natural light, with internal glass screens enhancing the flow throughout the building.
Serving as a focal point for the entire building, Allied was delighted to be part of this prestigious project that included both fire and non-fire rated frameless glazing systems to the atrium on ground, first and second floor levels.
Functioning as a concourse, administrative and meeting area, the atrium required the installation of three separate glazing systems offering varying levels of fire and acoustic performance:
– Komfort Single Glazed Polar Screens (non fire-rated)
– Komfort Single Glazed Polar Screens (30/30 fire rating)
– Komfort Double Glazed Polar Screens (non fire-rated)
Allied’s Architectural Glass Division offers a complete solution for the design, supply and installation of bespoke glass and structural glass projects. We work closely with architects and designers to consider all of the performance requirements in each case. This means we are able to provide specifications to NBS standards where required and advise technically on glass performance and aesthetics.
Double Glazed Office Partitions
This complex project involved the fit-out of a new state-of-the-art building at UCD’s Belfield Campus. From the outset, the contract programme was extremely tight but Allied ensured that the project was finished on time and to the satisfaction of both the client and architect.
Komfort Polar Double Glazed frameless glazing was specified for the internal office and meeting room partitions in the new building, as it met the 48dB(Rw) acoustic demands required. To add additional privacy in designated locations, certain glass partitions were supplied with a special frosted manifestation.
Containing both glazed and timber doors, the frameless glass partitioning system provides a very modern and minimal look and allows an abundance of natural light to filter through the building making it a pleasant working environment.
Komfort Polar is a relocatable partitioning system that combines visual appeal and versatility with options for both sound and fire resistance.
Architectural Glazing
Allied Workspace utilised the versatile properties of Komfort Polar Single Glazed Partitioning to create two, separate internal stairwell enclosures to ground and first floor at the new O’Brien Centre for Science in UCD.
The fully glazed frameless design of the system (including integrated glass swing doors) enables the flow of natural light throughout the stairs, and provides for an attractive and minimalistic appearance in addition to an acoustic performance level up to 38dB(Rw).
Double Glazed Fire Rated Partitions
Allied supplied and installed Double Glazed Fire-Rated Polar, a frameless partitioning system that can be integrated with either glass or fire resistant timber doors, and which offers up to a 30/30 fire rating as required by the project’s design criteria.
As well as being fire rated, the double glazed partition wall system provides an enhanced acoustic rating of 43dB(Rw) with its frameless design allowing the maximum amount of natural light to flow through the workplace.
